The history of Liberty Life Savers, also known as "Sullivan County Pregnancy Support Center", began in the summer of 2001, when two Sullivan County, NY, residents, Kathy Lounsbury and Jennifer Edwards, came together with an idea that germinated and grew to the Ministry that we have today. Kathy, a long-time teacher at the Tri-Valley High School in Grahamsville, NY, had witnessed the struggles of students who had faced teen pregnancies. Jennifer, having just lost her first child due to a chromosomal disorder, became increasingly convinced of the value of each life, no matter how small. The two friends shared their concerns and dreams.
Originally, their plan was to hold a support group ministry for unwed teen mothers in Kathy's home. With their ears tuned to the Lord's call, a deep-rooted compassion soon turned into a larger dream. Jennifer and Kathy met with the Director of New Paltz, NY, Pregnancy Support Center, Ellen Siletzky, and learned about the Ministry, and began to develop a mission for a center in Sullivan County, NY.
The first general informational meeting about forming a Crisis Pregnancy Center was held in January 2002. About 25 people from the local community attended, and by the early spring a Steering Committee was formed. After much research, the group decided to seek affiliation with the international organization known as Care Net. Established in the mid 1970's in Billy Graham's living room, Care Net has grown to include hundreds of pregnancy centers across the United States and abroad. The Steering Committee carefully followed the thorough and professional guidelines provided by Care Net. The Sullivan County Pregnancy Support Center (aka Liberty Life Savers) was officially incorporated as a non-profit Ministry in New York State in June 2002.
Many more milestones were reached, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Steering Committee. After a year and a half of laying a strong foundation, the Steering Committee dissolved and formed the first Board of Directors. The Center officially opened its doors on August 19, 2004, and the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and all of our precious volunteers will continue working hard toward our mission to bring gentle friendship, Christ's tenderness, and the truth about the dignity and value of each and every human life - the mother's, the father's, and the child's - into this world... one life at a time.
